REAL ID

Effective August 1, 2017 customers will have the option of obtaining a Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card in the Wallace County Treasurer's Office.

What is REAL ID?

The federal government Real ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued Driver's License and Identification Cards. The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, is a coordinated effort by the states and Federal Government to improve the reliability and accuracy of state-issued identification documents, which should inhibit terrorists' ability to evade detection by using fraudulent identification.

Effective April 27, 2021, the deadline to have a Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card has been extended to May 3, 2023. At that point in time a Real-ID compliant license or ID card will be required to board a domestic flight or enter designated federal facilities. A current Kansas license will work to board a domestic flight or enter a designated federal facility until May 2, 2023. Customers may wait until it is time for renewal to obtain a Real ID unless the renewal date is after May 3, 2023.  Please note:  If your current credential has the words "NOT FOR FEDERAL ID", we encourage you to obtain the REAL ID star on your license or ID prior to any air travel, to avoid any difficulties.

Adding REAL ID

If you are renewing your license at your renewal date, only regular renewal fees will apply. If you are obtaining a Real ID prior to your renewal date and ONLY the Real ID indicator is being added, the cost is $9.00.

You may already be flagged with the read ID indicator and will receive that on your new license upon renewal or replacement if you have received a new driver's license or identification card in Kansas since 2011. However, we cannot guarantee this is the case, so we encourage customers to bring in the documentation to reduce trips to the office.

Required Documents

  • Certified Birth Certificate or unexpired US passport
  • Social Security Card
  • Proofs of Kansas residency - we must see 2 proofs of valid physical Kansas address, such as a utility bill dated within the last 60 days. Junk mail or personal letters will not be accepted as proof.
  • Proof of name change, if using a birth certificate with a different name than the current driver's license or identification card
    • Marriage license
    • Divorce Decree
    • Adoption Decree or other court document, legalizing name change

If you do not bring in the required documents, you will be issued a Non-Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card which will have the words "Not For Federal ID" printed on the card.

REAL ID Indicator

A real ID Compliant driver's license or identification card will have a gold circle with a star cutout located in the upper right corner.  This indicator will not be printed on temporary licenses or a conceal carry permits.
